Book Review (Personal Opinion)
There is no doubt in my mind that Collins is one of today’s better authors in the teenage genre. Look at what she has done with the hunger games series, a global phenomenon, I am a big fan of the series for the most part, however, I felt that Collins set a bar with the first and second book that she just couldn't clear again for a third time. Don’t get me wrong, Mockingjay was a great book, I couldn't put it down, it was so exciting and had so many twists. But I don't think it was up to the standards that she set with The Hunger Games and Chasing Fire.
Although Mockingjay was not my favorite book in the world, there’s no denying that this is a good book. The way that Collins had a darker, more depressing tone to the novel makes the reader actually feel for the characters. I mean, it seems that every time Katniss finds some kind of happiness it is disrupted with some sort of bad or evil. For instance, when the rebels get capture Peeta and bring him back to the base. Katniss was so looking foreword to seeing Peeta again, and what happens, Peeta tries to kill her. It was the things like that that made me want to read on.
I also thought that Suzanne Collins did an excellent job narrating through the perspective of a 17-year-old girl. Any other book, (with the acceptation of J.K Rowling and Harry Potter) in which the author attempts to really show how a teenager feels has not been nearly as effective as Collins's. She really nailed it, all the way down from voice to the way that the characters speak, it was rare that a character would use a big word that I as a teenager didn't understand, unlike many other authors have done. I say that the she did a very good job with the voice of Katniss in this book because the mood of the story changes, when Katniss is happy, the mood is happy, but when Katniss is sad, the mood is sad. I thought this was very effective.
There were only a few things that I didn't like about this book. One of them being the lack of harmony between the good things that happen to the main characters and the bad things. I seemed that the rebellion faced catastrophe after catastrophe in this book, which created a very depressing mood to the reader. Nobody wants to read a depressing book, especially teenagers. It seemed as if there were way to many bad things happening to the main characters as opposed to not too many good things.
Now my biggest problem with this book has got to be the ending. There is some debate going on in the Teenage literature column of society
of weather or not the ending was good or not. Personally, I did not like it. I especially didn't like it when Prim and Finnick died. Both of these deaths were not absolutely necessary for the plot to go on, as well as I thought it was unfair to hit the readers in the soft spot that she
created with Prim and Finnick. Theirs nobody who doesn't like Prim or Finnick, so why did they have to die? I also thought it was silly how Kati’s ended up with Peeta and gale was just completely out of her life. I always thought that she would have to pick one sure, but not totally shut out the other one entirely. And lastly, I didn't think that Katniss would vote in favor for hunger games 76. This is soleus because it is totally unlike her to do something like that, especially because she knows what’s its like in the games. These are the issues that I personally had with the ending, but that’s only my opinion, maybe you loved the ending, it just didn't appeal to me.
All in all, Mockingjay was an O.K book, not my favorite, not my least favorite, I would recommend it to those who have read the first two, otherwise it would be terribly confusing. And to those who haven't even read the first one, I would highly recommend reading this series. Out of 5 starts I give Mockingjay 3.5.
